Ian Gibbins (Australia)

Anatomy & Histology

Ian Gibbins is a neuroscientist and Professor of Anatomy & Histology at Flinders University. He has over 100 publications on the microscopic structure and function of the nerves that control and monitor the activity of the internal organs and skin. His contribution have been recognised by an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and the Lawrie Austin Lecture of the Australian Neuroscience Society.

Ian is dedicated to promoting science to the broader public. His public presentations on art and science, often performed in collaboration with professional artists are very popular. Recently, Ian has developed significant creative output, mainly as a poet and electronic musician. His poems have been published in diverse national literary journals and he has been a finalist in several national poetry competitions, most recently the Newcastle Poetry Prize (2010). He shared a National Science Week Award for Unsung Hero of Science Communication in 2008.
