Microbiology

Sharing the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Rolf Zinkernagel for their discovery of how the immune system recognises virus infected cells, Laureate Professor Peter Doherty AC FAA FRS was named 1997 Australian of the Year and commutes between St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne. Graduating from the University of Queensland in Veterinary Science, he received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh Medical School. The first person with a Veterinary qualification to win a Nobel Prize, he writes articles, participates in radio discussions, delivers public lectures and has authored several books.
