Now that more than 50% of the world’s population lives in cities and towns, isn’t it time we thought a little harder about designing cities for growth – and for a smaller ecological footprint? On the present pattern of Australian urban settlement, the bulk of arable land on this dry, ancient continent will soon be concreted over with streets of detached houses. What are the better ways?
