Do we need new or better deliberative processes to cope with the complexities of making policy through the haze of politics? Are good government and deliberation even possible when the government now “announces and defends” rather than “consults and decides”? What is the role of the media? Also, how does the Federal/State divide work in all this? Federalism is meant to enhance deliberation, but it often seems to contribute to the so-called democratic deficit. There’s information everywhere now, but how can we turn it into fruitful political communication, let alone solid strategic decisions?
