The modern media is quite possibly the most important actor in the protection and promotion of human rights In the twenty-first century. For example, the role of social media in organising and galvanising protesters during the Arab Spring has been profound. The abuse of privacy exhibited in the “News of the World” hacking scandal manifests a darker side to the medial human rights relationship. In this session, Professor Joseph will discuss positive and negative effects of the media, including social media, on the enjoyment of human rights globally.
