Art dealer Sir Rex de Charembac Nan Kive11 (1898-1977) amassed one of London’s most significant private collections of material relating to the exploration and settlement of the Pacific. He never visited Australia yet is one of our most generous, largely unknown, benefactors. Nat Williams, the inaugural James and Bettison Treasures Curator at the National Library of Australia, reflects on Kivell’s life, collection and his continuing legacy.
