Quenching Our Thirst
Date: 2:30 pm | Sunday 9 October 2011
Venue: Bonython Hall
We think we know about drought. We turn off our taps, and take short showers. But what if you also knew that your recent shopping trip – a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a cheeseburger to stern those hunger pangs – cost the equivalent of 77 bathtubs of water… and that the cotton in your clothes came from water stressed parts of the world? What if your consumption patterns are contributing to famine in Ethiopia and war and genocide in the Sudan? As individuals, we can make a difference. Rather than buckets, the concept of “Virtual Water” gives us unconventional solutions to the world’s biggest problem.
